Descendants of Jean Norman

This tree was added to the site in 2012 and reviewed in 2019

It presents one of the most complicated family pictures we have ever encountered while checking a submitted tree. Unfortunately we cannot find our record of the original source. The detailed notes attached to Jean at generation 6 explain why the tree is so complicated. They suggest that there is just one Jean, he did have 13 children, by at least two wives, and he may have been married as many as four times.

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  3. This Jean, his marriage(s) and his children are a complicated mystery. Our first thought was that the tree may have combined two or more different Jeans into one person, but we have come to the conclusion that there was just one Jean and that he had the 13 children shown. How many wives he had is a large part of the mystery. We can only find a marriage record for Jean to an Elizabeth de Gruchy, who might have been the mother of earlier children than those listed here. Before using census returns to track the progress of Jean's family, it should be noted that we have found no baptisms for the first six children, but Marie Beaugie is shown as the mother of the last seven. Online trees, clearly copied from each other and with a large number of other inaccuracies, indicate that Jean and Marie married at St Lawrence on 8 September 1849. There is no such marriage in the St Lawrence church register and there were no non-Anglican marriages in the parish at this time. There is an 1849 marriage for Marie Beaugie to Jean Renouf, but that is probably a red herring. Jean Norman and Marie Beaugie are shown as the parents of the last seven children listed below in their St John baptism records. We have not found a family with Jean as head, and children John and Edward, in the 1841 census (but see below). The family appears in the 1851 census showing Jean, aged 39, living in St Lawrence with wife Mary, aged 23, and children John, Edouard and Anne Jane. Was his wife Marie Beaugie? Not if she was born in 1831, but there was a Mary Beaugie, baptised in St John in 1827, the daughter of Jean and Marie, nee Arthur. She cannot have been the mother of John and Edward, because she was only six years older than John and 11 older then Edward. The 1861 census shows Jean (now known as John) and his family in St John The six children from Anne to Francis are listed. John's wife is shown this time as Nancy, born in St John in about 1828. Is this Mary/Marie Beaugie? We know from baptism records that she was the mother of the last two. If she married Jean in 1849 she would also have been the mother of the other four. Perhaps the couple only started having their children baptised when they moved from St Lawrence to St John. The 1871 census again shows the family in St John. None of the first four children is listed, but the others, with the exception of Thomas, who probably died in infancy, are all shown. But John's wife is shown not as Mary but as Jane, born in St John in about 1828. The year and parish fit but the name has changed again. The 1881 census shows John, his wife as Mary, born in 1832 in St John, and children Francis, Walter, Winter, James and Mary to confirm that this is the same family. But John, who has been listed as a farmer since 1851, is now shown as a 69-year-old plasterer, with son Francis running the farm. Which takes us back to the 1841 census, because there was a record for a family in St Lawrence headed by John Norman, a plasterer. His wife was Elizabeth and he had children Mary (1836- ) and Edward (1839- ). There is a record from 1833 of the St Helier marriage of Jean Norman of St Lawrence and Elizabeth de Gruchy. Their two children baptised in St Lawrence in 1835 and 1837 were Elizabeth Jane and Marie. was this the Mary shown in the 1841 census? If so, was she also the mother of John and Edward? To summarise: There seems little doubt that Jean/John was father of the 13 children listed below, probably also of Mary in 1836/37, and possibly Elizabeth Jane in 1835. But who were his wives?Elizabeth de Gruchy, from 1833 to about 1848/49? (we have found no burial record for her); Marie Beaugie from 1849 until after the 1881 census? (We have found no burial record for her); and who were Jane and Nancy? What a lovely mystery!
