Caen is the capital of the départment of Calvados and also of Basse Normandie, so it is a town with important links with Jersey

Most important is that Caen has a university with a strong tradition in law, and generations of Jersey law students have undergone part of their training at the university. It was compulsory for a long time, although the obligation was removed in the 20th century, only to be reinstated for Advocates towards the end of the century.

The university is one of the oldest in France, having been founded in 1432 by Henry VI, King of England.
