Bishop family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and References

  1. Son of "Mr Bishop": St Brelade baptism (1726). Anne Bishop, who was almost certainly his elder sister, was baptised in that parish in 1724 as "fille de Mr Anthoine Bishop": see Descendants of Anthony Bishop
  2. Catherine was buried in 1811, aged 85, "widow of Anthoine Bishop". Her sister, Rachel Bichard (1723- ), married in 1748, Edouard Fiot of St Brelade. The couple were, in 1758, godparents of Thomas Bishop, son of Anthoine and Catherine. Their father will have given to the Bishop family, his Christian name of Pierre
  3. Probably the John Bishop, Master of Union in 1794: J. Jean (below)
  4. Perhaps the John Bishop, Master Mariner in 1815-1816 [see John Jean, below], who was Captain of Elisha Tupper in 1814, for Carteret Priaulx and Janvrin, in the South America trade: ed. Jamieson A.G., A People of the Sea, (Methuen, 1986), 320
  5. Master Mariner from 1804. Master of Betsy, (1804-1808), Virginia, (29 ton sloop, 1808-1809) and then Master and sole Owner of Lord Gambier (35 ton ketch, 1809-1819), then partner with Perchard as owners of Phoenix (110 ton schooner, 1823-9)
  6. Ship`s Carpenter and Mariner in 1851. He had also become a widower by then: Census, St Brelade, Jersey. Pierre (or Peter) was latterly a Schoolmaster in St Aubin
  7. Master Mariner
  8. Founder of Voisin & Co. (1837) and Constable of St Helier
  9. Living in 1841
  10. Master Mariner: John Jean, Jersey Sailing Ships, (Phillimore, 1982), 130; captain of Cornwall in 1790. Thomas had died by September 1809, when his widow, Anne Carrel, was godmother to Marie Anne Brine
  11. Anne Bishop and Edouard Billot, her husband, were in 1816 godparents of William Edouard Brine
  12. Died 30th August 1879, aged "91 ans 10 mois": St Brelade Register
  13. Issue thirteen children
  14. The Hampshire, England, Allegations for Marriage Licenses, 1689-1837, located at, describe Honour Hoare Edmunds as a minor, from Portsea, marrying with the consent of her father, John Edmunds, Blacksmith. More importantly, the groom, who gave his age as "21", was identified as being John Bishop of St Brelade, Jersey, whose age matched that given. The tree Descendants of John Bishop is therefore incorrect as to the date and place of John`s birth. John Bishop and his wife, Honour, were in 1812, godparents of Jean Brine
  15. The above Marriage License Allegations mention Peter Bishop`s place of residence as being St Helier, Jersey, and his stated age supplies a date of birth, 1790. His occupation was given as Mariner, so Peter was one of two men of this name and occupation. However, the other Peter, his 1st cousin, a widower from a young age, seems to have changed his profession. John Jean (see above) suspected the two Bishops, John and Peter, Masters in 1830 and 1831, respectively, of the Jersey vessel Othello, (Hamptonne & Co) were brothers. At the time of his marriage, Peter`s fiancée was a minor, marrying with the consent of her father, Nicholas Eastgate, Gunner, R.N. Peter Bishop and his wife, Mary Eastgate, were in 1821 godparents of Eliza Bishop Brine
