Descendants of Pierre Clement

TreeIcon.png

This tree was first added to the site in 2013. It was reviewed in 2018. There is an overlap of 3-4 generations between this tree and Descendants of Nicollas Clement of St Brelade (1485), from a different source, and the two should be researched together

Clement family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  3. Master Mariner and privateer captain of Revenge (1778) and Charming Nancy (1786). 6. Dame du Fiefs Luce de Carteret and ès Hâtains
  7. Of Badier, St Lawrence, Captain, RJM; Constable of St Lawrence, 1856-1862. He and his wife were parents of Clement Le Gros (1837-1900), Constable of St Lawrence, 1880-1889 and Jurat, 1889-1900
  8. Her first cousin
  9. Lieutenant, French Army
  10. Master Mariner. The Revd. J.A. Messervy, in his Genealogy of the Clement and Le Feuvre Families (Jersey: The Beresford Library Limited, 1920),4, states that Jean Clement was at one time a "Lieutenant in the Canadian Army". This would doubtless have been during the War of 1812, when men of local experience and leadership, with basic militia training, received what would, until recently, have been called emergency or short-term commissions in regiments already serving in that particular theatre of war. Another Jerseyman who received such a commission, without being a professional soldier, was the merchant David de Quetteville. As a privateer captain, Jean Clement probably had an artillery commission, perhaps the command of a shore battery. This may account for the apparent gap in Clement`s career at that time. John Jean notes in Jersey Sailing Ships, (Chichester: Phillimore & Co., 1982), 134, that Jean Clement was a privateer commander of Stag in 1812 and Pallas in 1815. Another ship, of which he was master, was in 1836 Eliza, then owned by Philippe Nicolle junior
  11. Seigneur of the Fiefs Luce de Carteret and ès Hâtains
  12. Of Belgrave House, Millbrook, Master Mariner, then Merchant. He was in 1853 master of the Nicolle`s barque Eliza, which his father had previously commanded and of which he was to become, in 1870, co-owner. In 1858, he took his family back into ship owning on becoming part-owner in two of Thomas Renouf`s vessels. When that partnership was merged in 1863, with that of Abraham de Gruchy to form Messrs. De Gruchy, Renouf, Clement & Company, he became both partner and merchant
  13. His first cousin
  14. Captain, RJM; engaged in Clement & Company`s business
  15. Of Cossipore Cottage, Millbrook. Partner in De Gruchy, Renouf and Clement
  16. Marriage in Newfoundland
  17. Magistrate in Newfoundland and Lieutenant, RJM
  18. Magistrate in Newfoundland
  19. Sole owner of De Gruchy, Renouf and Clement`s successor company, Clement & Company, until its sale in the 1950s. American freezer ships and a dwindling supply of cod had provided a living for Henry Clement, the last Jerseyman to own his own company in the North American fisheries, but nothing more. The era of cod fortunes building great fleets and magnificent houses for their Jersey owners, was over

  25. His cousin
  26. Master Mariner
  27. Master Mariner
